There’s A Lot More to Haiku Than Counting Syllables

This summer, the Society of Classical Poets hosted a haiku competition. Margaret Coats, the judge, has a deep knowledge of haiku and graciously shared many thoughts on the craft of haiku both before the contest, here, and after the contest, along with the announcement of the winners.

I was intrigued at the complexity of such an apparently simple form, and I was delighted at the beauty of these slight poems. Short poems can sometimes be the most powerful. These ones certainly are.

Please enjoy.
